Proper tailoring can make even basic pieces of clothing look amazing. Get the bespoke look without spending an arm and a leg by finding a great local tailor to custom fit clothing you buy off the rack. Here are three ways you can use a tailor to elevate your wardrobe:

1. Dress Pants

Dress pants are a versatile part of any wardrobe. They can be worn to the office and upscale events when paired with a blazer and dress shirt. They can even be worn to the mall on the weekend when paired with casual pieces. When purchasing pants such as the Circle S dress pants, shop according to your waist measurement. This is the key dimension that would be hardest to change; inseam length is negotiable.

In fact, if possible, find unhemmed dress pants. Unhemmed dress pants are left long, with a raw edge. Your tailor can then measure your inseam and cut and hem your pants to the correct length for your body type.

2. Dress Shirts

Dress shirts are a must-have for both business settings and date nights. Unfortunately, an ill-fitting dress shirt can make you look frumpy and unkempt, even if you try your best to iron it. When shopping for a dress shirt, find one that fits you through the shoulders. The shoulder seam should end at your natural shoulder line, not before or after. It's better to buy a shirt that's slightly too large than too small.

When you take your dress shirt to a tailor, they will likely taper it to follow the curve of your waist, adding darts in the back if necessary. This fit can make you look slimmer. It will also make suit jackets and blazers fit better, since there will not be so much bulky fabric getting in the way.

3. Jackets

If you're in the habit of wearing suits, you know how critical a properly fitting suit jacket can be. The most common fit problem in suit jackets are sleeves of the incorrect length. According to He Spoke Style,  1/2"–3/4" of the shirt cuff should show. A tailor will be able to lengthen or shorten your sleeves as necessary. They can also taper your sleeves to better fit your arms, which can have a slimming effect.

Don't be afraid to invest in your wardrobe. A few dollars spent on tailoring can make a world of difference in your attire. You'll look and feel better when you have clothes that look as though they were made just for you.
